The Galena Territory Association was awarded a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to restore the wilderness trails in the Territory. The money is supplied from the Federal Highway Authority (FHA) through the ISTEA21 appropriation. The grant is 80% reimbursement program. The Galena Territory has been awarded $192,860, for a project expected to be a total cost of $241,075. Each segment of the trail system will renovated, beginning with the Old Stagecoach Trail that runs from Eagle Ridge Drive to Heatherdowns by the Belden School. Although the construction will vary by segment, in general the construction involves grading, installation of culverts through streams to prevent erosion at the stream crossing, installation of waterbars along steep trail segments to direct water along the side of the trail bed, and covering the surface of the trail with wood chips to prevent erosion of the trail bed and cushion for horse's hoofs. Work began on Old Stagecoach Trail first, followed by Trail 2 system, the Trail 1 system, and so on. As work is progressing on the trails, segments will be posted as temporally closed. Please respect these signs and allow the contractor to work as quickly as possible and get the segment open again.
